Thinking
of a Sea-Change?
Having recently relocated ourselves, lock stock
and barrel to the beautiful climes and friendly atmosphere
of the Mid North Coast of NSW, I suppose you could
say that we have had a sea-change.
So what exactly is a sea-change?
Lately it has become part of the modern vernacular
to describe a lifestyle decision made by harried executives
and stressed out professionals who move out of the
big smoke away from the pressures and pollution to
a quieter seaside or country location.
The phrase actually comes originally from Ariel's
song in Shakespeare's “The Tempest”
Full fathom five thy father lies;
Of his bones are coral made;
Those are pearls that were his eyes:
Nothing of him that doth fade
But doth suffer a sea-change
Into something rich and strange.
According to Michael Quinion on his website www.worldwidewords.com,
Shakespeare meant that the transformation of the body
of Ferdinand's father was made by the sea but we have
come to refer to a sea-change as being a profound
transformation caused by any agency.
Does one therefore experience a profound transformation
when one sells up and relocates down by the seaside
or into the country?
Or when the dust has settled and the novelty has
worn off, do you find yourself in an unfamiliar place
with a different culture surrounded by strangers and
discover that you are no happier?
Do you discover that there is no transformation within
yourself?
Do you discover that you are faced with the same
old issues which have always caused you so much angst?
Only now, you've got an added set of worries and you're
feeling insecure and lonely.
This is the possible danger when you believe that
the grass will be greener on the other side of the
fence, whether it's relocating your home, changing
your job, or getting into a new relationship. It could
mean you merely transfer to your new situation, the
same issues from which you wish escape.
It actually takes a lot of courage to make a change
- any change. Fear of change is one of the major fears
that I encounter in my Clinical Hypnotherapy practise.
It can paralyse dreams, goals and plans.
So if you have the courage to change, that's great!
However it would be a good idea to enhance the other
powerful habits and attitudes you have to ensure that
your sea-change is a success or you may find yourself
in a revolving door doing a complete 360o .
You'll need to do a health check on your levels
of....
- self-confidence,
- self-reliance,
- flexibility and
- resilience.
You'll need in stock plenty of...
- positive attitude,
- humour,
- love and
- self-belief
And make sure you have a couple of affirmations memorised
like my favourites:
'no
matter what something good comes out of everything'”
and
'something fantastic is going to happen to me
today'”
because you will always encounter challenges. That's
life! And if you have the coping strategies in place
already, when the knocks come, you'll bounce right
back.
This is where a personal lifestyle journey of self-development
is so important. Lord Tennyson said the quest for
knowledge is like travelling towards the horizon,
the nearer you get, the father it recedes. In other
words, personal development is a continuing journey,
not a destination.
When contemplating any major change it is essential
to examine the reasons why you've made the decision
to change. If there is an element of "sick and
tired of being sick and tired", employ some deep
thought on identifying your life's challenges, what
has been getting you down, what always seems to be
out of balance.
Think of the spokes of a wheel as representing the
eight areas of your life. Which ones would fall short
of making it all the way to the rim?
Would it be financial?
Physical?
Spiritual?
Family?
Mental?
Personal?
Professional?
Social?
If any of these areas of your life need working on,
they are the ones which will always need working on,
sea-change or no sea-change.
This is not an easy task but the process is remarkably
simple. Look for some insights in coming issues of
The Winners' Ways.
It will be a busy month ahead in the lead up to Christmas
and the holiday season so make sure that you take
some time out for yourself and remember - success
is only a thought away.
